CP51/P-30 PROCESSOR

FOR ILFOCHROME P-30



This instruction manual for the Ilfochrome P-30 version of the Fujimoto CP51 processor, is a supplement to the standard CP51 instructions. Basic operation of the CP51 is the same as described in the standard instruction manual. The information provided here is specific to the Ilfochrome P-30 process and how it is used in the modified CP51 processor. As with all chemical processes, technical specifications may change from time-to-time at the discretion of the manufacturer. These instructions are accurate at the time of this writing. Ilford may make changes to the process without notifying Fujimoto or JOBO Fototechnic, Inc., so always review the instructions supplied with the chemicals when you purchase them.

The complete CP51/P-30 processor consists of:
· The Main Body (MB)
· The Extra-Solution (ES) Module
· The Wash/Dry (W/D) Module

The MB has been modified for optimum performance with Ilfochrome P-30 chemicals, and may not be suitable for use with other processes. In fact, due to problems of contamination, we strongly encourage you to not try any other process with this MB since it may permanently affect performance with the P-30 process. Efforts during testing to decontaminate a previously used MB were completely unsuccessful.

The modifications to the MB include the following:
· Stronger circulation pumps in the developer bath
· A design change in the racks
· A design change in the squeegee system
· A different spray bar in the developer bath, for increased agitation and circulation
· No replenishment pumps since the P-30 process is not a replenishable process. Testing with and without replenishment techniques, yielded a higher print output with better quality by simply re-using the available solutions until they were exhausted, rather than attempting to replenish the baths.

The ES Module is required along with the CP51/P-30 MB in order to provide the third chemical bath of the Ilfochrome P-30 process. The MB provides tanks for the developer and bleach. The ES Module provides the tank for the fixer step. Use of the W/D module is optional. The W/D module gives the convenience of dry-to-dry processing, and includes a proper washing environment. The pulsed infrared dryer works properly, even with the high-gloss Ilfochrome Classic materials.

Proper ventilation of your darkroom is very important when using Ilfochrome chemicals. The sulfurous odor is annoying, and presents a possible health hazard. To be most effective, have the ventilator draw the air from the vicinity of the processor. Make sure to provide adequate incoming air to allow the ventilator to exhaust the odors efficiently.

The ES Module requires 370 watts at 208/240 volts. It is connected directly to the MB via a screw-on multi-pin connector. Two power sockets are required for the complete processor; one from the MB and one from the W/D. The total load for a dry-to-dry processor is 18 Amps. If you have any questions about your electrical loads, check with your electrician.

Assembly
The assembly of the CP51/P-30 is essentially the same as described in the standard CP51 instructions, except that you will need to place the ES Module between the MB and the W/D Module. This will require a little more patience when it comes to leveling the modules. Remember that a good guide for making sure that all the modules are at the same height is to view the "waistband" of the processor modules. They should all be at the same height. Then work on the precise leveling of each module. A great deal of care applied here will save you much grief later. If the processor modules are not properly aligned and leveled, prints may not transport properly, or solutions may not cover the print evenly.

Filters
The chemical filters may need changing often. Check them each time you exhaust a 6 liter batch of chemicals. The developer filter will show the most visible clogging and may need to be replaced as often as every 6 liter batch of chemicals. Keep several of the #65120 chemical filters on hand as spares. They can be ordered through your favorite dealer or directly from JOBO Fototechnic.

Filling with Chemicals
As indicated in the regular instruction manual, be sure to use the supplied funnels to fill each bath. This is essential to assure that you have primed the circulation pumps. Once the solution is flowing out of the spray bars, you can pour the rest of the solution directly into the bath.

Start with the ES module when you fill the chemicals. Then the 2nd bath of the MB and then finally pour the developer into 1st bath of the MB. Filling the baths in this order could save you considerable frustration and money if there is a slight spill.

Settings for Operation
Set the HIGH SET temperature setting at 30.5C and the LOW SET temperature for 30.0C on the two baths of the MB. The ES Module has a dial on its control board to set the temperature. It is normally shipped with the temperature pre-set for 30.0C, but you should check it with a standard thermometer. If you need to increase the temperature, turn the dial clockwise. For a lower temperature turn it counter-clockwise. Whenever the heater is actually running, a red LED on the left side of the ES control drawer is illuminated. When it is blinking on and off every few seconds it has reached its set temperature.

The transport speed should be set at 130mm per minute in the control drawer of the Main Body in order to achieve 2 minutes per bath.

Initially set the dryer temperature to about 7 on its scale in the W/D control drawer and then adjust it as needed. If prints come out damp increase it. If they are dry but excessively curly, lower it. You will also need to adjust your W/D standby time for approximately 15 minutes. This too is found in the W/D control drawer. On current models that would mean to set it at 2 on its scale. Test it after you have set up the processor to make sure the dryer remains on until the paper has completely transported through, and then shuts off within a few minutes after exiting. If the dryer shuts off too soon, raise the setting. Each increment is approximately 5 minutes.

Feeding Prints
The main instruction manual for the CP51 indicates you can feed prints one after another, just a few seconds after the green paper indicator light goes out. However, due to the slower transport speed used for Ilfochrome, allow approximately 30 seconds before feeding in the next print. Prints should still be fed into the feed tray emulsion side down.

Cleanup and Disposal
Remember that Ilfochrome chemicals are among the most corrosive photo chemicals in use today. At the end of each processing session, be sure to clean up every spill. (Better yet, clean it up as quickly as possible after it occurs.) The chemicals can easily stain the plastic materials, and worse yet corrode any of the exposed metal parts. Also remember to wear gloves and eye protection whenever mixing, filling, draining or any other aspect of handling the Ilfochrome chemicals.

To dispose of the P-30 chemicals, be sure to mix the 3 baths together before pouring them down the drain. This will neutralize the pH of the chemicals and make them safer to pour down your drains. Of course, check with local regulations before disposing of any photo chemicals.

When you finish using the processor and it will be inactive for several days or more, be especially thorough in your cleaning procedures. Once you have disposed of the chemicals, fill each bath with water and let it circulate for 5-10 minutes. Drain and repeat this at least 2 more times. It is important that the water gets to circulate throughout the hoses and pumps to make sure no residual chemicals are left behind which might crystallize or corrode. Remember to rinse the filters too, and leave them soaking in water (separately to avoid contamination) between uses. If they dry with any chemicals within them, they may cease to function properly and will need to be replaced with fresh filters the next time you set up the processor.
